Award ceremony for Croucher Senior Research Fellowships and Innovation Awards 2014

The presentation ceremony for the Croucher Senior Research Fellowships and Croucher Innovation Awards was held last Thursday, April 3 2014.

Seven exceptional scholars from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) were honoured for their excellent scientific research achievements.

Professor Danny Chan and Professor Jin Dong-Yan of the Department of Biochemistry at Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at HKU, as well as Professor Huang Yu of the School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine at CUHK were presented with Senior Research Fellowships 2014/15, while Professor Annie Cheung Nga-Yin, Professor of Pathology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at HKU and Professor James Lau Yun-wong of the Department of Surgery, CUHK, were awarded Croucher Senior Medical Research Fellowships 2014/15.

The Croucher Senior Research Fellowships scheme, first introduced in 1997, is awarded to local academics that have excelled in scientific research work, and swish to devote more time and effort to research.

The Croucher Innovation Awards of 2013 went to Dr. Yao Wang, Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Dr. Hayden So Kwok-hay, Assistant Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

Established in 2012, , the Croucher Innovation Awards aim to identify a small number of exceptionally talented scientists working at an internationally competitive level and to offer substantial support to these “rising stars” at a formative stage in their careers.

The awards were presented by Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBS, JP, and Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR Government.

The award ceremony coincided with the 35th anniversary banquet of the Foundation, which took place on the same night at The Atrium of Island Shangri-la Hotel with over 100 people in attendance.

The banquet was graced by Amanda and Olivia Croucher Buckingham, the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of founder, Noel Croucher and the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Ya Ping.

In his opening speech, Chairman Professor Tak Wah Mak also announced the “renaissance of the Croucher Scholars Association” that was established decades ago, thanks to Dr Rosa Chan and her fellow return scholars who have been taking the initiative to breathe new life into the alumni association.
